WATER INTO WINE

"His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
~John 2:5

Weddings are a time of celebration and feasting - a joyous time. In Jewish tradition, the wedding celebration went on for seven days. In John, chapter two, we read that Jesus, Mary and the disciples were invited to a wedding in Cana of Galilee. On the third day, the host ran out of wine. To do so would have caused great embarrassment and shame for the bride and bridegroom.

The first recorded miracle of our Lord was turning water into wine. Why would God use this story as the first miracle? Who was the miracle really for? Is this a story about inviting Christ into your marriage or to drink or not to drink? Was it a lesson for his disciples or simply the first recorded miracle of our Lord? Was it about Jesus providing for our needs or…was it about the Lord revealing himself to those with servant's hearts?

It was to the servants that Mary said "Do whatever he tells you." It was to the servants that Jesus gave instructions to fill the stone water jars. These weren't just ordinary jars, they were for ceremonial cleansing. They filled them to the brim. Not half way, not three quarters of the way but to the brim, to the top. No arguing, no questioning his authority, just obedience. Jesus then tells them to draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. They did so.

Scripture states that the master did not realize where the wine had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. It was the servants who knew there was a need. It was the servants who got to experience the miracle first hand. The guests at the banquet did not even realize a miracle had taken place. It is those who humble themselves, step out in obedience and serve others that will experience the miracles, and even more importantly, the Lord Jesus up close and personal.

Do you see the needs of others and act on them? Do you have a servant's heart or are you the one who is always being served? Do you step out in obedience to serve the Lord?

Prayer:
Father, what great honor you bestowed on the servants at this wedding celebration. Thank you that you chose humble servants to reveal your glory to. How easy it is for us to overlook the needs of others and question those we serve. Thank you that you reveal yourself intimately to those who humble themselves to serve others. Give me a servant's heart that will seek to glorify you and honor those I serve.
