"Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. "
~Psalms 19:12
Who can discern his errors? To discern means to understand, to separate mentally. When we give God permission to search our hearts, to reveal the hidden sins, He will. We must then understand why we made the error or mistake. Without this discernment, we are doomed to repeat the same error over and over. Without getting to the root cause, we are prone to live an erroneous lifestyle.
I love the way the New Living Translation states it: "How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?" We all have secret or hidden faults in our hearts ¯ big and little. Some may be hidden to us, but are billboards to those around us. How easy it is to look at the errors of others and yet not see our own. There is a saying: "what bothers me about you may be a reflection of what is in me..."
The Psalmist asked God to forgive his hidden faults. The word "forgive" in Hebrew actually means to cleanse. He is asking God to cleanse the secret sins lurking in his heart. These hidden sins lie in wait to entrap the child of God. 1 John 1:9 says: "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Are there hidden sins lurking in your heart? Are you tired of making the same mistakes over and over? If so, take time today to ask God to reveal them to you. Give Him permission to cleanse your heart daily.
Prayer:
Father, I confess that I am not always able to see my own sins and mistakes. Forgive me for so quickly pointing out the errors of others. Help me to understand my hidden faults and cleanse my heart daily that I may be an open reflection of your beauty and grace.
