PRAISE, FAME & HONOR

"He has declared that he will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations... "
~Deuteronomy 26:19

Every time we turn on the television, we see movie stars, politicians and sports figures, the rich and famous, plastered across the screen. We love to see what they are wearing and who their latest "love" interest is. Stunned by their provocative clothing and way of life, we continue to gawk in amazement. We are mesmerized by their lavish lifestyle and hang onto every detail of their elaborate weddings and their messy divorces. We are even more astounded by the enormous amounts of money they are paid, as well as spend, and still seem to be unhappy. They have the fame, the praise and the honor, and oh yes, the money, yet so many seem to be self-destructive and miserable. How can this be? They seem to have everything.

In the beginning, the fame, constant praise and attention are exciting. They love the cameras, the glamorous photos and their names publicized around the world. Until...they mess up and their embarrassing "issues" are exposed for all to see. Their poised and posed snapshots quickly turned into mug shots when arrested for a DUI (driving under the influence). Almost monthly, it seems there is someone famous going into or coming out of rehab. Whether it is drugs, drinking, anorexia or bulimia, no one is exempt. No one is immune. Sooner or later, their addictions are exposed. You see, the rich and famous are just like you and me. They have problems and painful issues of the heart. The only difference is their issues are televised on the nightly news.

If God suddenly raised you up with fame, honor and praise, would you be able to handle the pressure? If the paparazzi followed your every move, what would they expose or uncover in your life? Would you be able to undergo such scrutiny? If we do not deal with the issues of the heart privately, just like the rich and famous, God will expose them publicly. Judgment starts in the house of God.

Prayer:
Father, forgive us for the ways we seek after fame, honor and praise seemingly in your name. Forgive us for the idols of our hearts that have taken our time, energy and focus off of worshipping you. Turn our hearts back to you and help us to be a holy people that seeks to glorify you.
